Gowanus Canal Sponge Park, Brooklyn, NY
dlandstudio llc
www.dlandstudio.com
dlandstudio worked with local residents, city government, and the Gowanus Canal Conservancy to create preliminary designs for a new type of park, a SPONGE PARK™, which would be aesthetically beautiful while working to reduce the problem of contaminated water flowing into the Gowanus Canal. The most unique feature of the park is its ability to improve the environment of the canal over time. This innovative plan proposes several ways to divert rain water runoff to irrigate the publicly accessible park along the canal, while reducing the input of storm water into the sewer system. dlandstudio has included plants in the design that thrive in different water inundation levels, and plants which draw heavy metals out of contaminated water.
