The Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, once the main train station and terminus of travel between Oyster Bay and New York City, is currently being restored to its original condition. The project includes improvements to adjacent streetscapes, open spaces, and a museum plaza. The design concept of the plaza is drawn from the history of the railroad, together with the rich, industrial and agricultural heritage of the town. To create this vision, a plaza was designed to include historical artifacts, rustic materials and original site furnishings. In response to the existing vehicular movement throughout the site, a plan was developed that redefines circulation and places emphasis on the pedestrian experience, while also providing usable open spaces for gathering and museum events. Additionally, paths are reconfigured to provide a direct link to downtown, the waterfront and adjacent park. Within the plaza space, paths are designed to mimic those of the neighboring rail lines and yard. Porous pavements, native plants and recycled materials are also used to reduce storm water and improve water quality. These elements, together with the rich history of the railroad, blend well with the vision of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum and the Town of Oyster Bay.
