While Times Square's streets are far cleaner and safer than they once were, they are too often cluttered, unappealing, ordinary, and, because crowding forces people into the streets, dangerous. With the Times Square Alliance, the area's business improvement district, Starr Whitehouse coordinated the Second Century Workshop, a design workshop tailored to come up with viable, imaginative solutions to the Times Square squeeze. The workshop aimed for nothing short of a larger vision to guide Times Square's development in its second century so that it is unquestionably one of the world's great public places. Starr Whitehouse developed, designed and produced for Times Square The Second Century Workshop Brief: Reimagining the Bowtie as an introduction for the workshop participants, bringing together base information, site analysis, programming, prioritization of needs, and precedent examples as a guide and inspiration to the Workshop participants. Following the workshop, Starr Whitehouse brought together the summary Times Square: the Second Century Workshop Results, featuring the ideas of the different design teams. The publications-the briefing book and the results summary-have enabled the client to shape opinion and change the discussion of the future of Times Square. They are the tangible evidence of the planning and communication that is enabling innovation in the urban landscape.
